Otoplasty

Regrettably, excessively prominent ears can be a source of much distress, especially in school aged children. Many older people are simply self conscious about their ears.

Surgical correction of the prominence can be readily performed under local or general anaesthesia as a day procedure, with a rapid recovery.

The surgery is eligible for a Medicare subsidy in children.

Neonatal Circumcision

Excision of the male foreskin has been practiced for religious and cultural reasons for thousands of years. More recently the procedure has become controversial, since it is essentially an unnecessary procedure which carries a small risk of complications. There are documented medical benefits of paediatric circumcision that disappear when circumcision is delayed beyond childhood.

These benefits include a significant reduction in urinary tract infection, elimination of tight foreskin problems, elimination of cancer of the penis risk, and significant reduction in risk of sexually transmitted diseases. The magnitude of these benefits is debatable, but they are never the less real and last a lifetime. The facts support the view that the risks are at least outweighed by the benefits, and it is legitimate for parents to choose the best option for their son.

BlueWren performs circumcision of healthy boys up to 6 weeks old using local anaesthesia and a plastic ‘bell’ device that is associated with an extremely low complication rate.

Breast/Body contour services
Bluewren Surgical offers a range of breast and body contour services

Abdominoplasty

Long term stretching of the muscles of the abdomen can be associated with age, obesity, and in women, pregnancy. This process is unfortunately often irreversible, and may not respond to any amount of body conditioning.

The problem is frequently compounded by skin laxity/excess, and localized fat deposits, both of which respond poorly to dieting and exercise.

The excess tissue can interfere with physical activity, make clothing fit difficult, and create hygiene problems.

Surgical tightening of the abdominal musculature and excision of the excess skin and fat, can restore a more youthful profile. The resultant scarring is usually well concealed, and the result durable.

Medically indicated cases are eligible for subsidy by Medicare and private health insurers.

Breast Cancer Surgery

The treatment of breast cancer requires accurate diagnosis, a high degree of multidisciplinary cooperation, good surgical judgment and a high level of surgical expertise.

Diagnosis and management is offered with a multidisciplinary approach and with modern oncoplastic techniques.

Breast reconstruction

Significant deformities or even absence of a breast after surgery for breast cancer can have a serious psychological impact that continues long after the pain of the initial diagnosis. Fortunately there are now a large number of surgical techniques that can restore an aesthetically acceptable breast shape, even after full mastectomy.

These techniques are individually tailored and may use a combination of available (autologous) body tissues and/or prosthetic implants. The timing and type of surgery depends on many individual factors and the options will be discussed at length prior to any surgery.

Breast reduction/Mastopexy

The size and shape of breast considered optimal is a very personal judgment and is based on many factors including individual physique, degree of physical activity and cultural factors. Breast size and shape is dynamic over a lifetime and affected by heredity, pregnancy and weight fluctuations.

Excessively large breasts are associated with chronic cervical/shoulder pain, difficult clothing fit, hygiene problems and interference with sporting activity.

Correction of breast ptosis (droop) with or without size reduction requires excision of excess skin and thus involve a degree of scarring. Recovery from surgery is usually surprisingly rapid and the benefits appreciated almost immediately.

Most reductions at BlueWren Surgical are performed using a ‘vertical’ technique, which is associated with a minimized scar and excellent long-term retention of breast shape.

Breast Augmentation

Private preference regarding breast shape and size is very personal, and has many aspects including lifestyle, and social/cultural influences.

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast. The intent is to create a larger bust and correct any deformities so that the result appears natural.

During this procedure, an incision is made around the areola (the dark circle of skin surrounding the nipple) or in the fold of the breast.

A silicone implant is carefully inserted either under or above the chest wall muscles. Once the implant is in place, the incision is stitched closed.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately one hour to complete. Most patients experience some breast sensitivity, soreness, and swelling for up to four weeks postoperatively.

Liposuction

Body shape is determined by many factors including skin quality, skeletal shape, muscle development and the thickness of subcutaneous fat.

Physical conditioning by exercise and healthy eating is of immense value in maintaining and improving appearance. However, localized deposits of fat, or areas of poor skin tone can remain after even the most diligent physical programs.

The removal of excess fat and even tightening of skin can be achieved by liposuction.

Significant improvement in body contour can be realistically achieved in many cases with surprisingly little discomfort or down-time.

Re-injection of treated fat can also be used to augment areas of contour deficiency with a very natural result.
